Michele: What do you do in the WordPress ecosystem?
Lindsey: Content Creator and Member of Post Status team
Michele: How did you get involved with WordPress?
Lindsey: My story starts like so many, and I fell in love. ha! But really, I was in politics, a very non-techie and very paper calendar type of industry. But the person I was dating was into the WordPress community and encouraged me to start a blog. It was called CallTimeBlog.com. Later I created a course at politicalheadstart.com, and the rest is history. I have been a part of WordPress ever since.
Michele: Please tell me one story of someone who has inspired you within the WordPress Community.
Lindsey: There are too many! When I was brand new to WordPress I was enamored with women like Lisa Sabin-Wilson who switched careers from Nursing to WordPress and found such phenomenal success. And Rebecca Gil who has been a mentor and personal friend, without her I wouldn’t have Content Journey. Winstina Hughes has taken a passion for helping others and turned it into an incredible project that supports our community – I am constantly inspired by her commitment and energy to do good. Michelle Frechette has the biggest heart to serve and support others. She is constantly working for the WordPress community and I think is the hardest working person I know. You get the point, I could go on all day!
Michele: What does the Open Source Community mean to you?
Lindsey: I know the Open Source Community has heavy meaning, but to me it is about helping other people succeed without asking for anything in return. It is an unselfish community. One that is created to serve. It speaks to my serving and helping heart and I just love the energy.
Michele: Please name some of your favorite plugins.
Lindsey: WSForms, Kadence Blocks & iThemes Security
Michele: Do you have a favorite theme or framework you like to use?
Lindsey: Kadence is my favorite right now.
Michele: If you could change one thing in WordPress, what would it be?
Lindsey: This is going to stir things up. But the dashboard. I think those of us who are used to it don’t think it is hard to navigate. However, I am around enough clients now to see how confusing it can be. And then how easy other CMS’s are and I get the pull into non-WordPress directions. So, the one thing: dashboard.
Michele: What is your most memorable WordPress moment?
Lindsey: In 2018 Sheryle Gillihan was the lead for WordCamp Ft. Worth, she gave such an amazing talk that lead through her background and her career. It was incredibly inspiring. At the same WordCamp Kori Ashton shared her story of recurring revenue and selling her agency. I left that day with so many ideas and feeling like I could follow in their footsteps. It was a moment I will always remember.
Michele: What is one piece of advice you would give to someone just getting started with WordPress?
Lindsey: Don’t be afraid to ask questions and introduce yourself to all those around you. It can feel intimidating to show up in our space for the first time and see all these people who already know each other. But we aren’t in high school anymore and we want to be open and helpful.
Michele: What do you think is in store for the future of WordPress?
Lindsey: Change is inevitable. I think we have to stay open and aware of innovation that can and should come to WordPress. Obviously, there have been a lot of acquisitions and rollups, but I don’t think that cuts out big and new ideas from coming in and disrupting. I look forward to seeing those.
Michele: Just for fun, share one memory that makes you proud to be a part of the WordPress Community.
Lindsey: My partner gave a really raw talk at WordCamp Denver several years ago. He really exposed his heart and some personal struggles. First, I was really proud of him for doing it, but even more all the people who rallied around him and shared their own stories. It has been a fantastic path to move away from “impressing everyone with my business-y amazingness” into a more real, here I am broken and hurt sometimes and I need help. And I have loved it all. Watching our community open up and help each other personally and not just professionally, it doesn’t get better.
